Despite the strange and even intimidating language astrology sometimes uses, the fundamentals of the art itself are really very simple. Certain planets seem to be symbols or metaphors for certain kinds of energy. Based on where these placements are in the sky and what they are doing at a particular time, an astrologer (or anyone who "knows the code" -- so to speak) can interpret and describe what these energies are "doing in the real world," the "evolutionary phase" they have reached in certain contexts, and, from that, forecast, speculate or offer information on how this may produce results in everything from vast social groups and movements to individual everyday lives.With Mars in retrograde (Mars Rx -- in shorthand) for the next two and a half months, this becomes a time when all the things Mars represents undergo, express and experience all the things Rx represents. (See? I said it was easy . . . although now I'll spend the rest of this article interpreting and discussing what this means "in plain English.")
The newsletter article also available here at this time, "Planets in Retrograde -- an Explanation" describes at length the dynamics and influence of retrograde energy as an influence of reworking, refocusing, redoing, rebuilding, reconsidering -- going back again into the structures of one's life and recreating something new, or at least something different.
With MERCURY Rx, which has been going on for a while now, you (and everyone else on Earth, whether they realize it or not) are dealing with intellectual energy, your mental processes, your capacity for logic and analysis, etc. You are redoing and reconstructing ideas, beliefs, opinions, perspectives, viewpoints and thoughts. You are gathering new information, taking in and reworking the "facts" of your life and your various situations, exchanging ideas with others in order to expand your own knowledge, coming to view all kinds of information and intellectual structures from a different -- hopefully wiser -- standpoint.
After Mercury goes direct on April 2nd, what you think and believe about the areas of your life Mercury energy most explicitly impacts will be changed, developed, improved and, above all, viewed differently in terms of goals and conclusions than where you were originally heading with your information and ideas. Except by observation and introspection, there is no way to know specifically what these most relevant areas are for you, personally, without having your chart done (or becoming an astrologer!!) -- but some very generic and broadbased information is available in the article on Mercury Rx, found either presently on the site along with this one (or in the archives when we retire it, as we will, shortly).
Now, with Mars also going Rx -- and staying that way for two and a half months, things get a little more complicated, and a little more interesting.
Mars represents physical action. Work as opposed to thought and planning. It represents your ability to take action and to set things in motion, to move forward to achieve your desired results. Mars also represents desire and sexual energy (and may indicate you are putting a lot more thought into how to bring more of those "experiences" -- both in quantity and quality -- into your life at this time.)
Mars describes your capacity to be direct, forceful and forthright, your capacity to be independent and pioneering, your capacity to pursue your ambitions -- and take vigorous action to get what you want. Mars energy is impulsive, determined, driven, competitve, and enthusiastic.
Mars energy represents the kind of desire and ambition that wants to move forward now!! And so in some ways retrograde motion is not all that comfortable for this very assertive and even impatient energy that wants to get things done -- because Mars Rx energy is literally devoted to "doing work over again." However, part of the creative process is to pause, look back, rebuild what wasn't done right the first time, fortify what needs to be stronger, and to solidify the results of one's action so that future progress can stand on more substantial foundations.
Mars Rx energy can also be the very constructive results of "learning from experience." A lot of pioneering initiative and creative effort does benefit enormously from the wisdom of hindsight. Having done something ONCE already, prepares you to do it the second (or third or fourth) time more efficiently, knowing where the potholes in the road were located last time, knowing how to avoid previous mistakes, knowing how to streamline the process as a result of your prior practice. In short, how to move faster and get where you're going more quickly -- with fewer stumbles and false steps to slow you down than happened when the path was strange, untravelled and unmapped, the first time through.
However much you may agree, though, that "doing things over" in certain areas of your life is necessary, even advantageous now -- there is still an almost unavoidable level of anger, frustration, impatience, restlessness and even resentment that accompanies this time. Lots of people will seem a little more on edge than usual, a little pushier -- and are perhaps chaffing more openly at feeling stalled, blocked, hemmed in, limited and "held back."
(There is a second factor, too, in play here -- which is that Mars is loosely in opposition to Saturn at this time -- for those of you who know what those energies represent. For those of you who don't, I will be doing an article on the Mars / Saturn Opposition when things here really lock down in very noticeable ways with this combination during August. Let's just say for now, the worst is yet to come.)
Obviously, for those of you who are able to make these connections quickly, Mars Rx is not the time to be blazing new trails and marking new territory. In fact, don't expect much "new progress" on anything during Mars Rx. What IS created at this time (especially whatever is newly created) will also have to be "redone" eventually -- because this is a time of shoring up, of finding other paths through which to pursue your goals, of finding even indirect -- or previously unrecognized and disregarded avenues of approach -- for achieving the ambitions and results you want to claim for yourself.
In fact, as you come to recognize the "life patterns" that astrology describes with its cosmic symbolism, you will probably see that what is really happening here is a "returning" to lay claim to something you already know about, are working toward, but that has either assumed more relevance and standing in your life than you originally believed it would have -- OR -- something you have been moving to achieve is taking longer and requiring more work to "claim it properly." Indeed, some combination of those two feelings may be very much present in the areas of life where Mars and it's Rx, energy is operating presently.
In the meanwhile, you will be working (literally re-working!!) certain areas of your life that will need more solidity and groundwork in the future, for things to evolve as you need them to -- so instead of approximately 2 months worth of work per sign -- which is the kind of time involved in the progression when Mars is direct -- you will get more than 6 months worth of "concentration" on the area of your chart affected, as Mars backs up . . . and moves forward again -- after June 4th, with new structures, plans and ambitions in place, that are probably more efficient and substantial than was the case when all this renovation started.
View all new projects begun at this time as "rough drafts" of what will eventually be needed. Wherever possible, give yourself the time, patience, latitude and scheduling comfort to accommodate this fact. It's not, as a rule, a good idea to move into a new house, a new city, take a new job, or start some important long-term project under Mars Rx, without understanding that it is probably a very "temporary" circumstance you are dealing with (and plan accordingly) -- even to the extent of coming to view the effort you are putting forth now as more a "false start" or "premature arrangement" than anything more dependable. What you are doing now . . . will change, probably substantially, before it reaches its intended results.
Understand that ambitions are changing at this time -- and be open to what new possibilities and opportunities arise. Realize that tempers flare faster and anger is more apparent now than "normally." Take that, also, into account. (The more dangerous side of this, is the repression of anger and resentment, often in the mistake belief that "things will get better in just a little while." This can become an extremely destructive tactic if you are not dealing honestly -- at least with yourself -- with your own feelings.)
Mars Rx is a time of redirecting effort and choosing somewhat modified goals. It may even be a time of reversing and changing choices made (and "work done") in the last approximately 2 years. With all this impatience afoot -- and the possibility of repressed aggressions and underground sexual energy operating -- do be extremely cautious about impulsive behavior or actions based on uncontrolled aggression, or even outright rage. Accidents of all kinds -- especially ones involving serious injury -- are more likely under a Mars Rx influence. A little extra care and a little extra tolerance may save you a lot of discomfort in the long run, if you can manage that kind of serenity, temperance and control now.
With all this in mind, therefore, let's talk about specifics -- or as "specific" as one can get within the obvious limitations of "general information." Remember too: the greatest benefit from this information comes from reading the sections pertaining to your Sun sign, your Moon sign and your Ascendant sign.
IF YOUR SUN, MOON OR ASCENDANT IS IN ARIES: If in the first ten degrees of the sign (the late March birthdays, for those using only their Sun sign information) -- movement to consolidate joint resources, or to utilize the assets, talents and abilities of others in some combined effort or teamwork enterprise, retraces its steps to solidify the basic "partnership agreement" on a new foundation or even perhaps a formal contractual understanding before moving on again. This will give a much better feeling of "knowing who your allies are" and what each is assigned to supply in whatever new ambition or mutual opportunity is being created in your life now.
If your personal placement is located beyond 10 degrees of the sign (if you are an April-born Aries), you will be working more exclusively with only the terms of a partnership and its "rules of operation." You may be rethinking what you want -- or what you want to contribute to -- a close personal association in your life. You may be especially considering the "ways you operate" within a marriage or other close partnership. There may be a lot of fussing and adjusting going on inside your one-to-one alliances and structures.
You may be looking for new agreements and new understandings -- and venting a lot, besides -- because the action (or inaction, or self-centered action, perhaps) of a partner has finally brought things to a head -- and you feel the need to get some things settled between you and clear the air. You may find this to be a time of asking what you really want to accomplish by staying together -- and perhaps considering whether you want to remain together at all. The answer will probably be: Not while operating on the same basis as has prevailed in the past. Both you and your partner may be quite forceful about making these new points very well understood.
This could be a rather eventful time in terms of fussing, skirmishes and general "conflict." It could also be very productive if you are mature enough to balance the polarity properly by realizing that your partner's actions -- as odd and aggravating as they may occasionally seem -- are actually aimed at helping achieve a mutually important result, namely your partner's ability to properly assert himself (or herself) in ways that allow a fuller contribution to this jointly valued effort.
IF YOUR SUN, MOON OR ASCENDANT IS IN TAURUS: If in the first ten degrees of the sign (the late April birthdays, for those who are using only their Sun sign information) -- movement to form a new alliance or partnership, or to "take mutual action" in some way (or on some project of mutual interest), reverses course so that you can "re-do" your working environment, the circumstances or agreements under which you perform work, or the kind of work you are doing (including the chores and favors you perform more for the benefit of others than for yourself.)
You may be setting up a renegotiated working arrangement so that you can better support the interests of a partnership -- OR -- you may be deciding just how you want to "offer yourself" to meet the needs of a partner. This can have either a positive or negative cast, depending somewhat on the compatibility of other elements in your chart. In other words, you may be deciding what you can offer to contribute to the success and nourishment of a partnership - OR - you may be deciding just how much you are willing to extend yourself on someone else's behalf. Objectively, there is a common theme of "service and self-sacrifice" in these two decisions, but they have very, very different tones -- and possibly, therefore, very different results.
On an even more negative note, it is possible that conflict with a parter, or within a close personal relationship, becomes SO severe that your health is affected, and some literal physical recuperation will be required, along with possible focus on how to create a healthier, less stressful, more satisfying life for yourself. It is also possible that some health issue becomes the focus of new interest, new work, or even conflict during this time.
If your personal placement is located beyond 10 degrees of the sign (if you are a May-born Taurus), some situation or circumstances in the "work" you do is having to be "re-done." Depending on the configurations in your chart, this may be anything from revamping some major job-related project, to reorganizing your working environment and responsibilities, to re-negotiating more congenial arrangements with difficult clients or colleagues (or re-structuring situations that don't work well for either of you any more.)
You may also find yourself dealing with the problems that result from overwork and feelings of constant aggravation and stress. These could be affecting your physical stamina and health in very destructive ways. You may even be trying to heal from some "semi-chronic" physical condition -- that has its roots in the kind of "work performance" you expect from yourself or that you've somehow acquired through agreement, compliance with the expectations of others, or simple force of habit.
You may also be looking at "how much you do for other people" -- and learning how much more benefit these "others" receive from your efforts than you do yourself -- and deciding that it's time to institute some new rules of operation. This may come about after a time of ongoing but unspoke irritation regarding a relationship with a client, colleague or other such "dependent" person who somehow plays a role in the "work" you perform -- whether or not the effort actually results in payment of cash or other benefits. Things like "chores," and "favors," and "because it's your job" . . . also fall in this category.
IF YOUR SUN, MOON OR ASCENDANT IS IN GEMINI: If in the first ten degrees of the sign (the late May birthdays, for those using only their Sun sign information) -- movement into a work or service situation, something you want to offer for the benefit of other people, some "new effort" you want to put forth, backs up to acquire more of your own personal creative touch before reaching its full potential. This can also manifest as a feeling that you are more ready to play than work right now -- and so you "goof off" a little longer maybe before really extending yourself.
Another manifestation of this could be that a relationship with a child (or brain child, or some other creative interest) requires more time and attention from you before you are able to get down to more serious business. Or you could also be finding more creative applications for your energy and its relationship to your work for the future, ways to have more personal impact that may take some adjustment to bring to full potential -- and may contain some element of risk as you introduce this into a fairly structured existing situation -- but these new possibilities are exciting ones (once they are in place and better understood by all) and are definitely worth the effort.
If your personal placement is located beyond 10 degrees of the sign (if you are an June-born Gemini), you will be using this time to actively and vigorously re-work your personal creative efforts. This energy could find expression in your pursuit of actual artistic efforts, in your seeking a more quality (or perhaps less stressful and less contentious) situation with your children -- especially a first born child, in your conduct of a romantic interest, in your involvement with "fun stuff" and leisure time activities, in the re-evaluation of some risk you'd like to take or some other speculative venture that appeals to your sense of adventure, or in discovering new ways to assert yourself and your "inner child" so as to bring more joy and pleasure to your life.
Obviously all this sounds like a lot of fun -- but there is an element of serious work involved in what you are doing here that may make it feel less delightful to you than it appears to others, or feel less carefree and whimsical to you now than it may seem when later you return to this time in memories and reminiscing.
IF YOUR SUN, MOON OR ASCENDANT IS IN CANCER: If in the first ten degrees of the sign (the late June birthdays, for those who are using only their Sun sign information) -- movement into a more playful, more creative, leisurely or romantic time -- or the adventurous contemplation of some "gamble" you'd like to take -- is interrupted for a while by a return to some slightly more serious activity (or focus) involving your home, domestic surroundings, physical living quarters, family, private life, or deep emotional needs. You've been doing something involving your home, family, or personal situation -- and it may not have been all that pleasant.
Despite the deep love of family and home for which this sign is famous, there is a sense of struggle that often goes with these matters that can make the reality that exists less appealing for you than the idea of close personal involvement with the situations and people found here. Something in this all important area of your personal world will be consuming a lot of effot and attention. Some real work is going on here -- and perhaps not under the calmest or most serene of circumstances -- but you are laying some very valuable foundations to support you in the eighteen to twenty-four months ahead.
Whatever you're doing here, do it well. This renovation or personal reorganization effort is building the security that is fundamental to your peace of mind, and the better this is overall, the less you have to fret and worry about stability and comfort in this area of your life, the more effective you will be in the creation of all that is due to follow.
Surely you've lived long enough to realize by now that scrimping on the requirements here -- or giving it less than your "best effort" overall -- is a waste, of you and of your resources and abilities. Take your time; you've got plenty of that right now. But get it done. Soft-pedal the moodiness, too, if you can. You also know . . . sometimes that really does just get in your way.

The vigorous assertion of your ideas, opinions, thoughts, beliefs, and viewpoints or the aggressive offering of information you want to share with colleagues and peers will require a lot more of your effort and attention during this time. Perhaps some of your contentiousness has brought you into conflict with others -- so that now you find yourself settling down and rethinking your previous positions, reworking the ways in which you promote your thoughts and opinions, restructuring the methods by which you assert your information, knowledge and other "intellectual products" into the world to compete with those of others.

Your ability to support yourself really well into the foreseeable future has likely become a matter of intense concern -- perhaps not for any objective lack in this area, but because of the connotations of you "deserving substantially more comfort" and you needing to experience a greater feeling of personal pride. Money, per se, may not really be the issue right now, but it has very likely become the means by which you are measuring your own progress and success -- the "way of keeping score," if you will.

Somehow you learn that you're not being sufficiently forceful to either express your personal values clearly enough to satisfy you -- or enough to have you "paid what you're worth." Either way, you'll incorporate ways to be more emphatic and even more "demanding" in your personal presentation. Let's face it. To make the proper impact, you've first got to get other people's attention. Learning to do that -- or kicking up the necessary fuss to get the job done -- is invested with a lot of your personal energy right now.

Self-assertion is not always your strong point. (Or at least honest self-assertion is not your strong point. Manipulative complaining and wheedling is more your preferred tactic. You can usually rationalize this enough as being "nice" or "cooperative" to satisfy your conscience.)
Mars in Libra is a rather paradoxical energy in the first place -- self-assertion, inextricably coupled with concepts of "cooperation" and "teamwork." That's the metaphorical combination. (Pulling constantly to get your own way while also constantly in "double harness" -- is what it amounts to. One can easily see how a chronic frustration results -- and from that, the "manipulation" I mentioned.)
Well, when Mars retrogrades in your sign -- as it is doing now -- you have to learn even finer skills of combining personal initiative with social diplomacy. While this will likely result in a more direct and candid assertion of personal goals and desires, learning to do this while still involved in partnerships and close personal relationships will remain your goal. That's not likely to change. You may simply become more honest about asserting what you want -- as opposed to couching it it terms of what we want as a coercive technique.
On the positive side, aligning what you do sincerely want with the genuine needs of the partner and the relationship is a more likely possibility now than it has been for quite a while. Your sign has chronic problems when it comes to drawing boundaries, and to distinguishing "me" from "thee", but this time -- and this energy -- will help.
IF YOUR SUN, MOON OR ASCENDANT IS IN SCORPIO: If in the first ten degrees of the sign (the late October birthdays, for those who are using only their Sun sign information) -- movement into vigorous self-assertion and promotion of personal desires backs up to undergo some more preparation and groundwork. Most likely this results from learning either that you aren't ready yet to assert yourself as intensely as you'd intended -- OR -- you've discovered a greater vision of what you want and what you think you can achieve -- and this needs some more development and preparation before you're ready to reveal it -- and yourself -- to the world.
Since there really is no more blatantly forceful sign in the Zodiac than a Scorpio with a mission and a made-up mind, the groundwork and preparation you devote to this effort will be thorough and exhaustive. (Exhausting, too, perhaps. I wouldn't be surprised.) And in these extra months, you'll be accumulating power all the while. Come late August / early September, Katie, bar the door. Let no man get in your way.

Lots and lots of intense preparation is going into this situation. And in your typically secretive Scorpio fashion, not much is going to show on the surface to betray all the effort you are invested in now. The results will be impressive, once they are ready to be revealed. They will also be ruthlessly pursued.
Mars in Scorpio (and again, for you, this influence will come on strong at last in August) is a bridge-burning, all-or-nothing, take-no-prisoner's kind of energy. It can be fascinating to watch, in a combination of admiring-yet-morbid way. When Mars energy moves through your sign, things in your life can change dramatically. And for reasons a bit too complicated to describe now in this article, you might, as part of all this preparation, be extra-ready for such this time.
IF YOUR SUN, MOON OR ASCENDANT IS IN SAGITTARIUS: If in the first ten degrees of the sign (the late November birthdays, for those using only their Sun sign information) -- movement into some place of "research and background preparation," some progress on a very private and perhaps personally creative behind-the-scenes project gets put on hold momentarily while you return to review your long-term goals, seek feedback from your acquaintances and the more trusted members of your social network, and re-envision something about the "ultimate good" you are looking to provide with the work you do or the name you want to make for yourself.
It may be that you need a bit more inspiration and ingenuity before returning to the "underground preparation" that will consume your attention for most of the summer. Or maybe you feel you just need some more time in the company of friends before holing up in a much more isolated situation and really getting down to business.
If your personal placement is located beyond 10 degrees of the sign (if you are a December-born Sagittarius), this may be a fairly intense time of socializing with friends, or working with friends, or making new friends, or expanding your involvement with friends. On the one hand, maybe this sounds very exciting and delightful. On the other hand, it certainly can be time and energy consuming, and made all the more serious by the "ulterior motives" you may have for being out and circulating so widely at this time.
In fact, you are really working on constructing your new goals for the future, because come September, you'll be reaching the end of a major two year cycle -- and looking to launch something new and exciting for yourself (possibly in conjunction with some well chosen colleagues and acquaintances) to work on, develop, offer and profit from over the NEXT two years -- and perhaps beyond, depending on the scope of your ambitions and activities.
In fact, this is the time of developing the preliminary vision for the next phase of your personal creativity. You are looking for feedback, suggestions, the ideas and inspirations of others to help solidify or ignite some of your own potentials. This can be a very intense and active time, crowded with both thinking and doing, experimenting and competing, even struggling and arguing in some cases, as you labor to assemble the raw materials of this new creation which will eventually bear your personal stamp of viewpoint and contribution.
Enjoy it while you can. As I said you'll be going "underground" in a little while -- and when you emerge, you'll have plenty to show for the time spend in seclusion and the data collection and visionary applications you're working on presently. It all has relevance "in the future," and you are one of the signs that works best with that concept, those goals, that kind of energy.
